Style Brief 08.23

Oh look, someone is easing into Pisces season with a bit of color!

Ok, not really, but until I can gather an ensemble that is the ideal Pisces look I shall just tell you about it instead. It is purple, lots of purple – but in softer pearlescent hues and with undercurrents of sky and oceanic turquoise blue. Also: fuchsia, white, and peacock green. Sometimes red too, but there must be depth to it like a Ruby gemstone. And there must be glimmer. Always something that glimmers.

Pisces isn’t afraid of a ruffle, a feather, nor a three piece uniform like a cute and cropped leather blazer with on-trend denim and a flowing blouse beneath. Or, go for the sexy look (but keep it elegant) and ditch the jacket for an off-the-shoulder something and long flowing skirt. Strappy heels/sandals only.

Even with all this softness, the style can be quite dark. See: Diane Arbus, Alexander McQueen, and Azzedine Alaïa. (Note: there may be Aquarius or Scorpio mixed in.)

Last thoughts, if Pisces is a Master in any one area of fashion (some how they find the discipline) it would be in draping. Folks who truly know how to drape are ARTISTS. And the imaginative ruler of Pisces, Neptune, knows how to take nothing and craft it into something beyond dreams.

Items featured in this week’s Style Brief:

By Far Sandals

ROTATE jumpsuit (that I would never wear to a public outing because it just awful for the curves of the lower tummy and hips, but that makes for a fantastic photo costume because of the pleats and long zipper down the back.)

Carven Sweater Black

Prada Dress Shirt

Vintage earrings sourced at Goodwill for $4…and on that note, I would like to emphasize the following:

Style and sophisticated dressing do not have to be expensive.

Style is a result of the way you carry yourself and the creativity of your dress. Sophistication arrives in your attention to composition and detail. The little earrings featured in this style brief are plastic with a patina (in person you cannot tell!) and when they dangle they are the length of my longest finger. In the afternoon sun their shine is exquisite. I can only imagine the way they will flicker at a candle-lit table. I can wear them with jeans and a T for a chic lunch, or with a long velvet dress for a winter wedding. They are a perfect pairing to my low cost thrifted denim jacket and the metal of my most expensive quilted handbag. All that for $4.

Because style is not about how much (or how little) you spend. Style comes forth in your creative choices, in the relationships you build with shape, line, color, and texture. What is the visual story you want to tell through the elements of design?
